Watching the trailer that came out today for Spike Jonze's awesome looking Where The Wild Things Are movie, I was reminded of another one of Maurice Sendak's seminal works, Really Rosie. Really Rosie is a 1975 musical that was animated for television and was broadcasted on channel KTLA5 in Los Angeles like every other Sunday. I loved the fuck out of this shit as a kid. It's about this bratty girl from Brooklyn that puts on a show with all the other brats in her 'hood. Its amazing I even liked this considering my disdain for drama students. Carol King did the songs and they totally kick ass. They bring me back to my innocent youth. *Tear* Grab this soundtrack. motherfuckers.

This version of "Big Sur" has never been released. It was intended for 1970's "Sunflower" but a completely different., yet super shitty country version ended up on 1973's "Holland." It is my single most favorite BB song.
Terry Melcher was not only a famed producer and drug buddies with Brian Wilson! He was also Doris Day's son!

Black Randy and the Metro Squad - Pass The Dust, I Think I'm Bowie (1979)

As promised here is the one and only album by Black Randy and it's fucking great.

The Metro Squad was a Hollywood punk super-group of sorts featuring members from The Randoms, The Dils and The Avengers. Their sound was spastic and funky. Think disco Crass.

There is a ton of stuff going on here, including a noisy version of "Say it Loud: I'm Black and I'm Proud" where Randy calls out James Chance for stealing his act as well as the dancey "I Slept in an Arcade" which was featured in the film "Ladies and Gentlemen... The Fabulous Stains."

PS:

The band had a rotating and fluid line up, which even included back-up singers such as Alice Bag and Belinda Carlisle.
There's a live track that references "Brenden re-opening up the Masque." Masque = Legendary Hollywood punk club. Brenden = Brenden Mullen who owned the Masque and wrote that really terrible movie about The Germs.
"Ladies and Gentlemen... The Fabulous Stains" was directed by Lou Adler who's son is the worst human in the world and should kill himself.

NOT COOL! Peter Falk's daughter filed legal papers in Los Angeles County Superior Court seeking a conservatorship over her Oscar-nominated father, claiming he suffers from both Alzheimer's and dementia and has become unable to care for himself.

SUCKY! Poor guy was photographed wandering around Beverly Hills a couple months ago talking to himself and ranting. He's one of the best!

If you're looking for shit to rent this weekend, do yourself a favor and see these two amazing performances:

Husbands (1970) - John Cassavetes was a total bro. Perhaps that is why he made one of the best movies about bro-ing down ever. Cassavetes wrote, directed and starred in this over-long, misogynist, uneasy classic with his two favorite bros Peter Falk and Ben Gazzara. They are drunk! They are improvising! They are on a bender in Europe because their other bro died! It's brutal, funny and pretty fucking deep. I urge you all to see this and try not to love Falk as shy dude Gus.

A Woman Under The Influence (1974) - Cassavetes also directed this super fucking heartbreaking story of a crazy ass mom in 1970s Los Angeles. Peter Falk plays the sometimes dickish/sometimes sweet husband to Gena Rowlends sometimes loving/sometimes drunken bitch of a wife. This movie is engraved in my mind forever, especially for the performances from Falk and the dudes playing his fellow manual laborers. See this if you, like me, are a kid from a fucked up family and were raised in the LA area.

Ennio Morricone - Duck, You Sucker OST 1971

First up is the score to Sergio Leone's unsung 1971 masterpiece "Duck, You Sucker" starring James Coburn and Rod Steiger. Many of Morricone's signature tricks are present throughout. Whistles, creepy guitar, kick ass percussion. This is a killer vinyl rip btw. One of my all time faves. ENJOY!

Notable roles:

Laserblast 1978: ...And the world is introduced to the Deez. The template for his lovable, yet vulnerable, nerd is born in this fantastic science fiction romp featuring a really awful, terrible cameo by Roddy McDowell.

Grease 1978: I've never heard of this movie.

I Wanna Hold Your Hand 1978: I think of only one thing when 1978 comes to mind, and that is the term "Deez-mania." This was an Oscar winning Beatles based comedy from the director that brought you such classcs as Used Cars and Death Becomes Her. Deezen plays the drummer of the Beatles, Richard "Ringo" Klaus.

1941 1979: Again, I don't know what this movie is.

Midnight Madness 1980: Perhaps the greatest statement on college ever put on celluloid, Disney's live action caper "Midnight Madmen" brings to life cartoon character Micheal "J." Fox and reunites him once again with America's Eddie Deezen.

Zapped 1980: I don't remember who Eddie plays in this, but it is a really good movie.

WarGames 1983: Pictured above - Eddie as "Malvin" in Wargames, explaining to Mathew Broderick how to break into the military computer system. Dabney Coleman won BEST MAN in the Awards for this one.

Surf II 1984: Edward plays a downright nasty funky dirty "Menlo Schwartzer." A criminal mastermind that wants to rid the world of man's greatest enemy: Surfers. ***** stars

Eddie Deezen died in 1985 at the age of 43.

The songs had been unofficially released on a bootleg called The Alice Demos many years before this official release. The source of the bootleg release is supposed to be from studio recordings made for the cast of the play, and was taken when Waits's car was broken into in late 1992 (as confirmed by Waits in interviews. Several different versions of the bootleg album were in circulation before the release of the official version.

Dead Man is the soundtrack to the 1995 Jim Jarmusch western-themed film of the same name starring Gary Farmer and Johnny Depp as William Blake. Neil Young recorded the soundtrack by improvising (mostly on his electric guitar, with some acoustic guitar, piano and organ) as he watched the newly edited film alone in a recording studio. The soundtrack album consists of seven instrumental tracks by Young, with dialog excerpts from the film and Johnny Depp reading the poetry of William Blake interspersed between the music. The version of the main theme used over the film's beginning and end credits is not included, but was released as a promo single.

Leon Russell didn't get to be the World's Champion Hip Okie by accident. He earned it on Stones sessions, by writing "Give Peace a Chance," by teaming up with Joe Cocker -- and he's just paid more dues with Leon Russell and the Shelter People, one of the best rock albums so far this year. Russell practically invented what might as well be called Okie rock -- with that shit-kicker Gospel sound, heavy on Baptist-revival piano and chorus -- and it gets as good on this album as you'll ever hear. He works wonders on Dylan's "It's a Hard Rain Gonna Fall," wails through a lovingly ironic piano-pounding tribute to Little Richard on "Crystal Closet Queen" and lopes through "She Smiles like a River," a rolling hill-folky ballad apparently inspired by "Life Is like a Mountain Railway." And there's more -- much more.

Culture Shock was an anarcho-punk / ska punk band formed in Warminster, Wiltshire, UK, in 1986 by Dick Lucas, previously of the Subhumans. Over their three year history the band played hundreds of gigs, including frequent appearances at free festivals, and released three studio albums on the Bluurg label. Dick's lyrics were mostly concerned with social and political issues, from cruelty to animals, Northern Ireland, war, and social alienation, but were far from angry rants, often finding a positive and empowering perspective. Culture Shock split in 1989, as Bill and Nige both had young families to support. Dick went on to form Citizen Fish with Jasper, the bassist for Culture Shock's final album, and two other former members of the Subhumans. Nige died in 1993.

The Braen's Machine is a mysterious study group, whose albums issued by Liuto label (Piero Umiliani's property) are the most wanted and change hands for a considerable amount of money ("Underground"'s price is about 1500 dollars on 3rd Coast Sound Distortion Catalog for example).
Exploito psych monster rarity. Recorded by Piero Umiliani at the now legendary SOUND-WORK-SHOP studio in January 1971. Released in a very limited (less than 100) number of copies.
The original vinyl is practically impossible to find out.
Acid drenched fuzz guitar with one funky rhythm section. The drum sound its pretty interesting.
The style is not far from other ghost-groups of the same period, an instrumental music that could be used as a movie soundtrack, with fuzz guitar and keyboards in predominance, and probably more psych-oriented than others. It's sure under Braen's Machine's name Piero Umiliani and Alessandro Alessandroni are hidden, as they appeared with their nicknames Braen and Gisteri as the album tracks composers. The name Braen also appears as a composer in the two singles by The Pawnshop.
A major surprise this one, as it seemed all the great 1970's Italian prog albums are already known. Take one part instrumental film/library/exploito ala Blue Phantom, The Bigroup and Ugly Custard and complete that with atmospheres that rival the earliest Krautrock scene ala early Guru Guru circa "UFO". Absolutely phenomenal fuzz guitar throughout, with loads of studio effects, to give it a completely underground feel indeed. Quite a bit of high quality drumming can be found here as well. First track of nine is a bit of a let down, having an almost 60’s “Batman” feel to it, giving off an aura of an exploitation album, but it greatly improves from there.

Death Wish II is a soundtrack album by Jimmy Page, released by Swan Song Records on February 15, 1982 to accompany the film Death Wish II. Following the XYZ project, Page was asked by his Berkshire neighbour, movie director Michael Winner, to record a soundtrack for the film Death Wish II in late August 1981. Death Wish II starred Charles Bronson, and was set around Chicago, which inspired Page to write a blues flavour soundtrack. Page was given a deadline of a few weeks to write and record the album at his home studio The Sol, and travelled on location to Los Angeles with Winner for songwriting themes. The soundtrack features Dave Mattacks from Fairport Convention, former Pretty Things keyboards player Gordon Edwards, and veteran singer Chris Farlowe. Page uses a Roland guitar synthesizer on a number of tracks. Tracks from this album were later reused by Winner for Death Wish III. Page was later asked to compose the soundtrack for Scream for Help (1985), but suggested John Paul Jones to Winner instead.

For Robert Altman's 1980 film Popeye, he recruited Harry Nilsson to do the songs and Van Dyke Parks to do the film score. The songs were sung in the film by the characters, a la any musical, but the original demos of Harry singing them still exist.
Apparently Harry was not the clear cut choice to do the songs according to Altman, "Nobody wanted him at first except Robin Williams. Everyone said 'You'll get in trouble with him -- he'll get drunk; he won't do it; he's all washed up.' As a matter of fact I said all of those things about Harry to Robin myself one day. Then I went home and thought about it and said to myself, 'Jesus, that's what some people are saying about me!' So I called Harry Nilsson, because I had never met him in my life, and we got along terrifically."
